New Delhi: On World Stroke Day, Zerodha Co-founder and CEO Nithin Kamath shared a powerful message — “Every minute counts during a stroke.” Kamath, who survived a stroke last year, highlighted the life-saving importance of reaching a hospital within the golden 4.5-hour window.
Every year on October 29, World Stroke Day spreads awareness about one of the world’s leading causes of disability and death. A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is cut off. This causes brain cells to die every second. Kamath stressed that quick medical attention during this crucial period can mean the difference between recovery and lifelong impairment.
Taking to social media platform X, Kamath reflected on his own experience:
“If there’s one thing I wish I’d done differently when I was hit by a stroke last January, it would be to go to the hospital immediately within the Golden Hour instead of thinking I could just sleep it off.”
He warned against the “nothing will happen to me” mindset, noting a worrying rise in stroke cases among younger adults. “Strokes are rising sharply, with nearly 30% of cases now seen in people aged 30 to 50,” he added.
Health experts say nearly 80% of strokes are preventable through simple habits managing blood pressure, controlling diabetes, quitting tobacco, staying active, and eating a balanced diet.
Neurologist Dr. Deep Das advised people to remember the acronym BE FAST Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, and Time to spot early symptoms and act quickly.
Kamath’s message serves as a wake-up call: “When it comes to strokes, time is brain — every minute truly counts.”
