New Delhi : Popular messaging platform WhatsApp faced a major outage in India on Monday, leaving thousands of users struggling to send messages or post status updates.
According to outage-monitoring website Downdetector, there were 410 reports of issues by 2:20 p.m. Of these, 54 per cent of users reported server connection problems, 24 per cent flagged issues with WhatsApp on desktop, and 22 per cent faced disruptions on the mobile app.
Frustrated users took to social media to share their experiences. One posted, “aunties and uncles sending good morning gifs in the WhatsApp GC lemme put this bag down and go to bed.” Another tweeted simply, “#WhatsApp is down!!”
Several users on X (formerly Twitter) confirmed that the outage was not limited to India, with one commenting, “Yes, it’s not just you. WhatsApp is down globally!”
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has not yet issued an official statement regarding the cause of the disruption.
This is not the first time the platform has experienced outages this year. In April, WhatsApp suffered a similar disruption, preventing users from sending messages or posting status updates for several hours. On April 12, Down Detector reported that 81 per cent of users faced messaging problems while 16 per cent reported overall app issues.
Earlier in February, WhatsApp also experienced a massive global outage, with users reporting connectivity problems across WhatsApp Web, the mobile app, and voice/video calls. On that day, Down Detector recorded over 9,000 complaints.
As WhatsApp continues to serve millions of users daily in India, these repeated outages underscore the platform’s importance and the inconvenience caused when services go offline.
