New Delhi: Indian wrestler Vishvajit More wins bronze in the 55 kg Greco-Roman category at the U-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship in Novi Sad, Serbia, bringing pride to the nation.
Vishvajit began the championship with a strong win over a Romanian wrestler in the first round. Next, he defeated a wrestler from the USA by technical superiority, showing his early dominance. However, he lost in the quarterfinals to UWW wrestler Alibek. Since Alibek reached the final, Vishvajit earned a second chance in the repechage round.
Then, in the repechage, Vishvajit made a strong comeback by defeating a Georgian wrestler. Finally, he faced the Kazakh opponent in the bronze medal match. With skill and focus, he triumphed 5–4, securing India’s first medal of the tournament.
This achievement marks a proud moment for Indian wrestling. Moreover, it highlights the growing strength and determination of young Indian wrestlers on the world stage.
A total of 29 Indian wrestlers are competing at the U-23 World Wrestling Championships 2025, held from October 20 to 27 in Novi Sad. Meanwhile, the competition spans 10 weight categories each in men’s and women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, with India entering one athlete per category except in men’s freestyle 125kg. Around 700 wrestlers from across the globe are participating in the event.
As a result of his bronze medal win, Vishvajit More has inspired young athletes in India to aim high in international wrestling. Overall, the victory underscores India’s growing prominence in the sport and adds another proud moment to its wrestling history.
