Two-wheeler sales in India reached 13,73,675 units in August, marking a 2.18% rise over 13,44,380 units in the same month last year, even as many buyers postponed purchases ahead of the GST 2.0 reforms coming into effect on September 22.
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported that passenger vehicle (PV) sales inched up to 3,23,256 units last month from 3,20,291 units in August 2024. The commercial vehicle segment grew 8.55% to 75,592 units, compared to 69,635 units a year ago, while three-wheeler retail sales stood at 1,03,105 units.
Overall, total vehicle retail sales increased by 2.84% to 19,64,547 units last month, up from 19,10,312 units in the same period last year.
August began on a positive note with healthy enquiries and festive bookings. However, momentum slowed in the latter half as the announcement of GST 2.0 reforms encouraged buyers to defer purchases, anticipating lower rates in September.
In the two-wheeler segment, enquiries remained robust, driven by festivals such as Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi, with many customers seeking auspicious-day deliveries.
“Customers showed strong enthusiasm with high enquiries and robust bookings. The only slowdown was in conversions, as buyers awaited the GST 2.0 benefits kicking in from September,” said C.S. Vigneshwar, FADA President.
Dealers remain confident that September will herald accelerated growth, supported by festive demand and policy tailwinds, ensuring a strong start to the automotive festive season.
