Mumbai : Sachin Tendulkar inaugurates the renovated Shivaji Park Gymkhana (SPG) in Mumbai during a grand ceremony on Monday, and a large crowd warmly welcomed the Bharat Ratna awardee.
Shivaji Park, a landmark of Marathi culture and sport, celebrated a new chapter with the official opening of the revamped Gymkhana. The atmosphere was charged with excitement, and Tendulkar heightened the moment when he cut the ribbon to mark the start of a modern era for the historic venue.
During his address, Tendulkar reflected on his deep connection to the park. “I remember spending my childhood here. We used to enjoy vada pav after practice. Today, this gymkhana stands ready, and many people worked hard to make it happen. Raj Thackeray not only helped with permissions but also contributed to its design,” he said.
Moreover, Tendulkar outlined his vision for the future of young athletes. “The Shivaji Park Gymkhana has entered its first innings. I wish children make the most of these facilities, train hard, and bring pride to the Gymkhana, Mumbai, and the nation. That’s my only wish as a cricketer,” he added.
In addition, several prominent figures joined the celebration, including Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Milind Narvekar, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, Mahesh Sawant, and other dignitaries.
Notably, the venue carries personal significance for Tendulkar, as his cricket training began at SPG under the legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar.
After nearly eighteen months of renovation, the Gymkhana now features a refreshed, modern look. Designers introduced soothing shades of green and beige in the interiors, which preserve its heritage while adding a contemporary atmosphere.
Furthermore, one of the most important highlights of the redevelopment is the launch of a women’s cricket team, which reflects the growing popularity of women’s cricket in India. The management also installed upgraded facilities, including separate changing rooms and restrooms for female players, especially those competing in Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) tournaments.
As a result, the revamped Shivaji Park Gymkhana now stands as a proud symbol of Mumbai’s sporting heritage and its evolving future, ready to nurture the next generation of cricketing talent.
