New Delhi : Former opener Matthew Hayden weighed in on Rohit Sharma future World Cup prospects as India’s ODI captaincy saw a surprise change ahead of the three-match series against Australia. Hayden described Rohit’s removal as “an interesting move from afar” and highlighted the veteran batsman’s continued importance to the team.
After India’s convincing win in the first Test against the West Indies, Rohit was replaced by opening partner Shubman Gill as the ODI captain. Hayden noted that Rohit’s batting returns will now be closely watched when the series begins in Perth on Sunday.
“Rohit being axed as captain was an interesting move from afar. At 38, with a couple of years left before the World Cup, he becomes vulnerable purely due to age,” Hayden said.

Bonus if Rohit Plays in 2027 World Cup
Despite stepping down as captain, Hayden emphasized that Rohit Sharma future World Cup participation would be a major bonus for Team India.
“The talent and class are always on display, and so is that magnificent body of work. Just like in the Virat and Dhoni eras, Rohit’s experience has contributed to India’s success as a team,” Hayden explained.
He added that grooming Shubman Gill as captain while Rohit remains in the squad offers a mix of leadership training and insurance for the future.
Youth and Experience Key for India’s ODI Setup
Hayden praised India’s ODI squad for balancing seasoned players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli with young talent, particularly Yashasvi Jaiswal.
“Success in ODI cricket depends on the right mix of youth and experience. The youthful energy of someone like Jaiswal, alongside Rohit and Virat’s experience, is vital. The same goes for bowling and fielding; athletic energy is key for 50-over matches,” Hayden said.
He noted that senior players already have an eye on the 2027 World Cup, making the upcoming series a crucial preparation phase.
Indian Stars Set to Shine Down Under
Hayden also highlighted the immense fan support for Indian players in Australia, particularly in Perth.
“Optus Stadium is a stunning venue. With over a million Indians living here, the crowd support will be incredible. They’ll celebrate Virat, Rohit, and even want to see India win,” he said.
The former Australia opener expressed excitement at seeing Rohit Sharma future World Cup potential unfold alongside Virat Kohli’s return to international cricket, emphasizing their experience and impact on India’s ODI fortunes.
