Odisha on High Alert: Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorms & Flood Watch Issued

Bhubaneswar, June 17 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated the monsoon alert to Orange in Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda and Yellow in several surrounding districts due to heavy to very heavy rainfall, gusty thunderstorms, and lightning expected through June 19.

Strong thunderstorms—accompanied by winds reaching 30–40 km/h—are forecast across Odisha, with pockets of heavy rainfall that could cause flash flooding, roads to submerge, damage to crops and plantations, and risks to unsecured structures . Residents are urged to stay alert, avoid low-lying areas, and secure outdoor items not tightly fastened.

Local authorities in Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj and Jharsuguda have initiated increased monitoring, clearing drainage systems, and pre-staging emergency response teams. Farmers have been advised to delay sowing and protect their fields from waterlogging.

As Bhubaneswar braces for persistent rain with intermittent thunderstorms through the weekend, officials are readying backup lines of action, including temporary shelters and traffic control plans. Flood-prone neighborhoods are especially on alert for sudden water surges.

What Residents Should Know

  • Secure loose items (e.g., outdoor furniture, signage).
