New Delhi : The India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) offers substantial benefits to participating countries, with the potential to boost economic growth across Europe, India, and the Gulf. For Israel, it provides a strategic opportunity to enhance its role on economic, geographic, and geopolitical levels.

Uzay Bulut, writing for JNS, emphasizes that Israel should prioritize implementing IMEC once the war with Hamas concludes. The project, supported by India, the European Union, UAE, France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and the United States, envisions a multi-modal network of railways, ports, and highways to enhance trade efficiency and regional collaboration. The corridor is expected to include key Mediterranean ports: Haifa (Israel), Piraeus (Greece), and Trieste (Italy), offering a potential alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Mordechai Chaziza of the University of Haifa notes that IMEC goes beyond economic gains; it could redefine Israel’s regional strategic status. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu frames the corridor as a platform for integrating Israel into Arab economies and global supply chains. Early estimates suggest IMEC could reduce logistics costs by 30% and transportation time by 40% compared to shipping via the Suez Canal, while also minimizing supply chain risks and energy costs.

The October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks and the ensuing conflict with Gaza temporarily stalled the project. Regional instability, particularly from Iran’s proxies, has further delayed progress, including a potential Saudi-Israeli normalization deal. Nevertheless, experts such as Rachel Rizzo and Nicholas Shafer argue that careful diplomatic management could allow the project to move forward, even before full normalization.

Nir Levitan and professors Arie Reich and Jonathan Rynhold recommend initial steps to realize IMEC’s economic potential, including establishing a multilateral framework for structured dialogue, a dedicated body to attract private investment, and coordinated infrastructure development among participating nations.

Through IMEC, the U.S. and European Union aim to strengthen connectivity with South Asia and the Gulf, aligning strategic objectives and countering China’s regional influence. Several European countries, including France and Italy, have appointed special envoys to support IMEC. Israel and Cyprus have also announced new energy projects, revitalizing the Israel-Cyprus-Greece trilateral forum.

With coordinated support from Europe, the United States, and Israel, the IMEC initiative could unlock significant regional economic and strategic opportunities, provided Israel stabilizes the Gaza situation and actively participates in advancing the corridor.
