New Delhi : In a major development for India’s seafood sector, the European Union (EU) has approved 102 new Indian fishery establishments for exports to EU member countries, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced on Tuesday.
The expansion demonstrates growing confidence in India’s food safety and quality assurance systems and represents a major step toward enhanced market access for Indian seafood products, including aquaculture shrimps and cephalopods such as squid, cuttlefish, and octopus.
This approval follows a series of meetings between Indian officials, including Union Minister Piyush Goyal, and EU representatives. They recognized the robustness of the Export Inspection Council’s (EIC) control mechanisms, which ensure Indian seafood meets stringent international standards.
“The inclusion of these establishments will significantly enhance India’s seafood exports to the EU, one of the most quality-sensitive markets globally. Exporters across coastal states and Union Territories can now tap into EU demand, diversify products, and strengthen trade relations,” the ministry said.
Indian seafood complies with EU regulations, reflecting the country’s commitment to food safety, traceability, and global quality standards. This strengthens India’s reputation as a trusted supplier of high-quality seafood.
Officials expect this move to boost export volumes, generate employment, and increase foreign exchange earnings. The Department of Commerce reaffirmed that it will support exporters through policy facilitation, infrastructure development, and capacity building.
The Export Inspection Council (EIC) and Export Inspection Agencies actively monitor Indian seafood products to ensure compliance with international norms, safeguard public health, and enhance confidence in Indian seafood exports.
This development signals stronger bilateral trust in product standards and opens a new chapter for India’s seafood industry in the global market.
