Sambalpur, Odisha : In a bid to regulate water levels and ensure balanced reservoir management, authorities at Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur have opened 18 sluice gates to discharge excess water. This measure comes amid a decline in the reservoir’s inflow, while outflow remains significantly higher.
According to official data, 12 gates on the left side and 6 on the right side of the dam are currently open. The water level in the Hirakud reservoir stands at 612.85 feet.
At present, the dam is receiving 2,19,022 cusecs of water per second, while 3,11,305 cusecs of water are being discharged at the same rate. The discharge is being carried out to maintain a safe balance between inflow and outflow.
Despite a dip in inflow, the increased release is being carried out as a precautionary measure to avoid downstream flooding and maintain structural integrity. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and may adjust gate operations as needed based on weather conditions and upstream inflow.
