Jharsuguda : Torrential rains have battered Jharsuguda district, causing widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and public utilities. Among the worst-hit areas is Laikera block, where several villages remain submerged and residents displaced. In response, Jharsuguda MLA Tankadhar Tripathy undertook a detailed inspection of the flood-affected regions on Saturday.
MLA Tripathy first visited Babu Chipidhi and Rengalbeda villages in Laikera block, where he found extensive damage. Three houses were completely destroyed in Babu Chipidhi, while Rengalbeda reported flooding in 15 to 20 houses, with two to three completely demolished by the rains. Expressing concern over the situation, Tripathy assured locals of immediate relief and rehabilitation support.
The inspection continued through Kirmira block, where the Bhimjor Handatup and Bhimjor Tileimal roads suffered severe erosion and damage. In Telidihi Sulahi Panchayat’s Duleshara village, and Bandhpali Panchayat’s Bhalupatra and Sialrama areas, the MLA interacted with residents, assessing damages and listening to grievances firsthand.
Urban areas have also borne the brunt of the downpour. In Jharsuguda Municipality, particularly Ward No. 16 (Gayatri Bihar, Tripathy Old Town), water overflowed from the Purnabasti pond into residential zones, submerging several homes. Tripathy reviewed the damage and assured residents of timely assistance.
Local authorities have begun relocating affected families to safer locations, where they are being provided with cooked meals and medical care. During his visit, MLA Tripathy reiterated his commitment to ensuring all essential arrangements are made swiftly.
Additionally, several paved roads across the district have been damaged or washed away. Reconstruction of these roads will begin on a war footing, stated Tripathy, adding that the situation in Jharsuguda city itself is alarming and requires urgent intervention.
The MLA has already apprised the Hon’ble Revenue Minister and the Chief Minister about the scale of devastation. Emphasizing unity in the face of calamity, he called upon citizens and local organizations to come together and extend support in this time of need.
