New Delhi: Microsoft will begin Copilot data processing in India by the end of 2025. This move gives users more control over their information and ensures faster, safer AI interactions. The company aims to strengthen privacy, compliance, and performance. They plan to achieve this through a local data-handling initiative.
Microsoft plans to start in-country processing for Microsoft 365 Copilot in four nations India, Japan, Australia, and the UK. This move will minimize latency and make Copilot experiences more responsive. Customers can choose to have their Copilot data processed within their national borders instead of abroad.
The tech giant said this update supports government agencies and regulated industries that require strict data governance and security. “By keeping AI interactions within each country, we enhance user trust and compliance with local regulations,” Microsoft added.
In 2026, Microsoft will extend the feature to 11 more countries, including the US, Canada, Germany, and the UAE. The company already offers in-country data residency for Microsoft 365 and Copilot users across 27 nations and in-region processing for the European Union (EU) Data Boundary.
India’s booming digital sector makes this initiative timely. The country’s data centre capacity could rise from 1.2 GW to nearly 8 GW by 2030. It is growing at 17% annually. This surge reflects India’s fast-paced digital transformation, increased AI adoption, and growing cloud demand.
With Copilot data processing in India, Microsoft continues to align its global AI operations with local data protection needs, supporting the country’s vision of a secure and self-reliant digital ecosystem.
