Sundargarh, Odisha: In a shocking incident at the Banei Sub-Divisional Hospital in Sundargarh district, a 4-year-old child suffering from fever was mistakenly administered an anti-rabies injection meant for dog bite cases instead of appropriate treatment. The alarming case of medical negligence has sparked public outrage and calls for accountability.
According to the child’s family, they had taken the boy to the government hospital after he developed a high fever. To their utter disbelief, the attending doctor prescribed an anti-rabies vaccine, typically used to treat patients bitten by dogs. The error came to light when the medicine counter staff inquired whether the child had suffered a dog bite.
Despite the family’s objection and clarification that no such incident had occurred, the staff allegedly proceeded to administer the injection. When the distressed parents later questioned the doctor, he reportedly tore the original prescription and issued a new one, attempting to cover up the mistake.
The doctor later defended his action, claiming it was a “vaccine” given for the child’s protection. However, this has raised serious questions regarding protocol violations and the rationale behind administering a dog-bite vaccine to a child with only fever symptoms.
The family has demanded an investigation into the matter, and locals are calling for strict disciplinary action against the doctor and staff involved. The district health authorities are yet to issue an official response.
