New Delhi : Asia Cup 2025 India faces the unique ‘ring of fire’ challenge at Dubai Stadium, and fielding coach T. Dilip says the team is adapting well to the conditions ahead of their high-stakes matches.
Dilip explained how this “ring of fire” creates a distinct challenge, especially for high catches along the boundary.
“One of the challenges we encounter in Dubai Stadium is that the lights differ slightly. They form more of a ring in the dome rather than poles, which we usually see,” Dilip said in a video posted by the BCCI on X.
He added that outfielders struggle most when attempting catches against the backdrop of the floodlights. “The challenge in the ring of fire is particularly on boundary-line catches. You can lose sight of the ball for a split second, especially when it travels through the lights.”
Beyond the lights, Dilip noted that Dubai’s humidity also affects match conditions. “Players need to stay fully focused at every moment and respond quickly to each ball, which is crucial given Dubai’s high humidity, especially in a fast-paced T20 game,” he said.
The Hyderabad-based coach, who has worked with the Indian team since Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach, also broke down training techniques for these conditions. “Humidity and depth perception affect high catches over time. If players lose sight of the ball for even a split second, they may panic. We use variable practice sessions so players learn to adjust and react correctly even under the floodlights,” he explained.
Dilip also stressed the importance of footwork alongside safe hands. “A fielder’s speed to reach the ball makes a huge difference. Hands alone are not enough; quick foot movement toward the ball is equally important,” he added.
With two wins in as many matches, India have already secured a place in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup. They will face Oman in their final group fixture in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
