New Delhi : Ashwin signs Sydney Thunder deal and makes history by becoming the first Indian male cricketer to join Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). His inclusion in BBL 15 is also seen as one of the biggest overseas signings since the league began.
Indian women have long played in leagues worldwide, including the WBBL. However, the BCCI bars active Indian male players from overseas T20 events. Only retired cricketers can take part. Ashwin, who stepped away from international and IPL cricket earlier this year, now takes that path.
“Thunder were crystal clear about my role and brave enough to back it. Our conversations matched perfectly, and I felt aligned with their vision. I admire Dave Warner’s style, and it excites me to join a leader who shares my mindset,” Ashwin said in a statement.
Ashwin will join the Thunder in January. His confirmed fixtures include the Gabba clash with Brisbane Heat on January 10, a home game against Melbourne Renegades on January 12, and the Sydney Smash at the SCG on January 16.
Ashwin’s career speaks volumes. He played 287 matches for India and claimed 765 international wickets, including 537 in Tests. He won the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. In 2016, the ICC named him both Cricketer of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year. He also featured in the Men’s Test Team of the Decade (2011–2020).
In the IPL, Ashwin played 221 matches across 16 seasons, taking 187 wickets. He lifted the trophy twice with Chennai Super Kings in 2010 and 2011.
Sydney Thunder general manager Trent Copeland praised the signing. “Ashwin impressed us with his passion, hunger to win, and deep understanding of the game. His experience will guide our younger players, while his link to Western Sydney’s Indian diaspora will attract new fans.”
Thunder begin their BBL 15 campaign against Hobart Hurricanes on December 16, followed by the Sydney Smash at ENGIE Stadium on December 20.
