Bhubaneswar/Bolangir, Odisha : Bolangir’s Deogaon block in Odisha has turned the Nuamunda pond at Khagasikana into a shining success story under the Amrit Sarovar Mission. What was once a neglected water body now thrives as a symbol of tradition, irrigation, and community power.
The pond, spread over 1.1 acres near the sacred Swarpneswar Mahadev temple, has always held cultural and spiritual significance. For decades, villagers used it for worship and community gatherings. Over time, however, siltation, weak embankments, and poor upkeep reduced its water storage. Villagers demanded full restoration so the pond could again sustain their livelihoods while preserving its sacred value.
The block administration identified Nuamunda pond for Amrit Sarovar development. Officials, panchayat representatives, SHG members, and local villagers jointly decided to revive it. Technical teams assessed its condition, and the community agreed on a holistic restoration plan.
Funds of ₹10 lakh from MGNREGS and ₹5 lakh from Finance Commission grants fueled the project. Workers deepened the pond to restore a 10,000 cubic meter storage capacity, strengthened the embankments with stone pitching and turfing, stabilized the slopes, and repaired the catchment area. Encroachments were removed, trees were planted, and shaded seating with lights transformed the surroundings into a vibrant community space. Villagers themselves planted saplings and contributed labor, turning the project into a people’s movement.
This revival has delivered wide benefits. Farmers now access irrigation for multiple crops. Improved water retention boosts soil moisture and groundwater. Opportunities for fish farming and floriculture expand local incomes. Trees, seating, and lighting create recreational space for families. By blending tradition with modern needs, the project respects community sentiments while strengthening livelihoods.
Local sarpanch Jibani Dash praised the initiative, calling it a true example of government and community partnership. She noted how collective willpower ensured success at the grassroots level.
Across Odisha, authorities have identified 7,075 sites under the Amrit Sarovar Mission, with work progressing at 487 locations. These efforts not only support irrigation and conservation but also promote cultural preservation and rural beautification. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and direct guidance of Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Rabi Narayan Nayak, rural development remains a top priority.
The renewed Nuamunda pond now stands as a model of participatory governance. It demonstrates how welfare schemes, responsive administration, and active citizen involvement can transform rural landscapes. Above all, it reflects the true spirit and strength of Panchayati Raj in Odisha.
