New Delhi : Legendary former Australia captain Allan Border has issued a blunt warning to Sam Konstas, urging the young batsman to curb his ramp shots and focus on solid technique if he wants to make a mark in Test cricket.
The 20-year-old Konstas made headlines last December when he scored a lively 60 off 65 balls on debut at the MCG, but recent struggles have raised doubts over his role in the upcoming Ashes series.
“Sam Konstas, I’ve only ever seen him play a ramp shot. Can he cover drive or anything else? He constantly tries the ramp shot. It’s handy, but I’d leave it until I’ve got a few runs on the board,” Border said on SENQ Breakfast.
He added, “Just stop the ramp shot. Give yourself a chance to settle in and play conventional cricket. There are many ways to score in Tests. You don’t need the ramp shot every time. He’s good enough, but I haven’t seen it yet.”
Border also weighed in on Australia’s opener dilemma, noting that aside from Marnus Labuschagne, no one has really pushed for the role. Labuschagne, who has never opened in Tests, has only one Test century since 2022 but recently scored four centuries in five innings across List A and Sheffield Shield games for Queensland.
Border said, “It’s a million-dollar question. Labuschagne could open if asked, but I feel he might slot in at No. 3. Usman is a lock-in, and Renshaw might be the right choice. Weatherald is doing well, but the top three is very, very important for Australia.”
With the Ashes series looming, Border’s advice highlights the need for young players like Konstas to balance flashy shots with solid technique, ensuring Australia’s top order remains strong against England.
