New Delhi, Sep 9 : Airbnb India economic impact: Hospitality giant Airbnb contributed Rs 113 billion to India’s GDP in 2024, supporting 111,000 jobs and generating Rs 24 billion in wage income, according to a report by Oxford Economics commissioned by Airbnb.
The research highlighted Airbnb’s significant contribution to tourism-driven employment, including 38,000 jobs in transport and storage, 19,600 in food and beverage services, 16,800 in wholesale and retail trade, and 10,700 in manufacturing.
Domestic travellers accounted for approximately 91% of Airbnb guests in India last year, up from 79% in 2019, reflecting a surge in internal tourism, especially among younger travellers. Among international visitors, the US, UK, Canada, and Australia were the largest sources of inbound guests.
In 2024, Airbnb guest spending in India reached Rs 112 billion, covering both accommodation and non‑accommodation expenses. The platform accounted for 0.5% of India’s travel and tourism GDP and supported 0.2% of tourism-related employment, equivalent to one in every 417 tourism jobs.
Airbnb’s economic footprint extended beyond tourism, injecting Rs 31 billion in transport and storage, Rs 15 billion in agriculture, Rs 13 billion in real estate, and Rs 12 billion in manufacturing.
“India’s tourism sector is driven by strong domestic demand. From bustling cities to small towns, Indian travellers are exploring the richness of their own country,” said James Lambert, Director of Economic Consulting Asia for Oxford Economics. He added that strategic partnerships with international platforms could further boost inbound tourism.
Amanpreet Bajaj, Country Head – Airbnb India and Southeast Asia, said the report highlights domestic travel as the primary engine of tourism, supporting micro-entrepreneurship, allied sectors, and small businesses across emerging and lesser-known destinations.
