New Delhi : The Yamuna River floods have affected nearly 18,000 people across Delhi, prompting the government to activate 35 relief camps and carry out large-scale evacuations. Officials reported that authorities evacuated around 5,000 residents from East Delhi using boats.
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) deployed NDRF teams to assist residents from low-lying areas, ensuring their safety. Special teams also moved livestock—including cattle, goats, buffaloes, and dogs—to safer locations.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta appealed to citizens to remain calm and avoid rumors. “The government, civic bodies, NDRF, public representatives, and social organizations are working together. We will bring the situation under control soon,” she said.
Tents and relief facilities provide essential amenities such as food, clean drinking water, and toilets. The Delhi Jal Board, MCD, and DUSIB coordinated to maintain services in all affected districts.
District officials, under the leadership of the East Delhi District Magistrate, successfully conducted boat evacuations from the Yamuna floodplains. Divers and boatmen risked their lives to save hundreds of animals while rescuing residents.
The Irrigation and Flood Control Department of Delhi is monitoring water releases from the Okhla Barrage in coordination with the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department, ensuring floodwaters flow downstream efficiently. Meanwhile, South-West and North Delhi districts faced waterlogging due to damaged drains in neighboring Haryana. Authorities are addressing the issue in close consultation with Haryana officials.
The Central Water Commission reported that several hundred thousand cusecs of water flowed into Delhi from Hathnikund Barrage on September 4. By 4 p.m. on Friday, the discharge had decreased to 58,000 cusecs. At the Old Railway Bridge, the Yamuna water level stood at 207.18 metres, above the danger mark of 205.33 metres but slightly above the evacuation level of 206 metres. Officials expect the level to recede to 207.15 metres by 8 p.m.
District-wise, East Delhi recorded 7,200 affected people with 7 relief camps; North-East Delhi had 5,200 affected, 13 relief camps; South-East Delhi 4,200 affected, 8 relief camps; Shahdara 30 affected, 1 relief camp; and North Delhi 1,350 affected, 6 relief camps.
Authorities continue to monitor the Yamuna closely and remain ready for further evacuations to ensure public safety.
