Vizhinjam port global importance has grown rapidly. In just ten months, 500 ships have arrived, showcasing its rise as a world-class maritime hub. As India’s first deep-water, multi-purpose, container transshipment port, Vizhinjam is transforming the nation’s shipping landscape. The port reduces dependence on foreign ports and strengthens India’s role in global trade routes.
Thiruvananthapuram : The arrival of 500 ships in ten months proves the global importance of Vizhinjam, India’s first deep-water container transshipment port.
“Achieving this remarkable feat in just ten months since launching operations is truly noteworthy,” said Kerala Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan on Tuesday. Vizhinjam International Seaport, he noted, has scripted a new chapter in India’s maritime history.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) developed and operates Vizhinjam. On Tuesday, the port handled its 500th vessel. It also set another milestone—the berthing of MSC Verona with a draft of 17.1 metres, the deepest draft container ship serviced at an Indian port.
Vasavan added, “With MSC Verona anchoring at 17.1 metres, Vizhinjam set two records in a single day. The port is growing steadily with firm steps.”
Since December 2024, Vizhinjam has handled 1.1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). This already surpasses its projected annual capacity.
Of the 500 vessels, 28 were Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). No other Indian port has received so many.
Vasavan highlighted the pride Vizhinjam evokes among Malayalis worldwide. “No matter where one travels, the sight of the tagline ‘Vizhinjam – Thiruvananthapuram – Kerala – India’ brings immense pride,” he said.
Industry experts point to Vizhinjam’s depth of 18–20 metres and minimal littoral drift. These natural advantages make it uniquely capable of handling the world’s largest container ships.
The port sits close to major east-west shipping lanes. It is quickly emerging as India’s premier deep-water transshipment hub. By doing so, it reduces reliance on foreign ports and strengthens India’s role in global trade routes.
With milestones coming thick and fast, Vizhinjam continues to cement its reputation as the “Wonder Port of India.” It underscores India’s growing maritime strength and expanding economic horizons.
Vizhinjam also lies near the world-famous Kovalam beach, just 14 km from Kerala’s capital city.
