New Delhi : The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday announced the official schedule for the Vice Presidential Election 2025, with polling (if required) to be held on September 9. The last date for filing nominations has been set for August 21, 2025, the Commission confirmed.
The announcement follows the resignation of Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, former Vice President of India, as notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) through a Gazette Notification (S.O. 3354(E)) dated July 22, 2025. In line with its constitutional mandate under Article 324, the ECI is now overseeing the electoral process.
Preparatory activities for the election began on July 23, with the Commission undertaking key groundwork. These include:
- Finalising the Electoral College, comprising elected and nominated members of both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha;
- Appointment of the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officer(s);
- Compilation and circulation of background material on previous Vice Presidential elections.
The election is governed by the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974. The ECI noted that all pre-poll formalities have been put in motion and that it is fully prepared to conduct the election in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
Further details regarding the scrutiny of nominations, withdrawal deadlines, and polling arrangements are expected to be released in the coming days.
