The Vice Presidential election India 2025 will be held today at the New Parliament Building in New Delhi, with voting scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to elect the country’s next Vice President.
The post, which also carries the responsibility of being the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21 citing health concerns. His departure has left a leadership void in the Upper House, making today’s election especially significant.
According to officials, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will cast the first vote this morning. Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Ram Mohan Naidu, along with Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, have been appointed as official election agents.
The electoral college comprises 781 members, including 542 MPs from the Lok Sabha and 239 from the Rajya Sabha (233 elected and 12 nominated, with six seats currently vacant). Each vote carries equal value, and polling will be conducted through a secret ballot. The majority mark required to win is 391 votes.
Counting of votes will begin at 6 p.m., with the results expected to be announced later in the evening. While the NDA enjoys a clear numerical edge, political analysts suggest the possibility of cross-voting could add an element of suspense to the final outcome.
The election is seen not only as a test of numerical strength in Parliament but also as a reflection of shifting alliances within Indian politics.
