Jharsuguda, Odisha : Mr. Upendra Nath Dhandia on Friday officially took charge as the new Director of Veer Surendra Sai (VSS) Airport in Jharsuguda, replacing Mr. Sandeep Tiwari, who has been transferred to New Delhi. The change of leadership comes at a crucial time when the airport is undergoing major development and expansion projects to cater to the growing needs of western Odisha.
After assuming office, Mr. Dhandia addressed the media and shared details about the airport’s current scenario and future prospects. He underlined the importance of modernising facilities at VSS Airport, which has fast emerged as the primary aviation gateway to western Odisha.
The new airport director informed that multiple infrastructure projects are already in progress. These include the construction of a second terminal building to ease congestion, a dedicated administrative office, and a hostel facility for staff. The airport is also undertaking Phase-3 runway expansion, which is expected to enhance flight operations and accommodate larger aircraft in the future.
Highlighting the role of technology in strengthening air traffic management, Mr. Dhandia said the airport is preparing to implement an Air Traffic Services (ATS) automation system. This system will increase the airport’s traffic handling capacity and improve operational efficiency. Additionally, a radar system upgrade is planned to boost surveillance and safety standards.
At present, Veer Surendra Sai Airport handles nine flights a week, with an average daily passenger movement of 1,200 to 1,400. Talks are underway with the Air Force Headquarters in New Delhi to further strengthen facilities and to expand connectivity to Visakhapatnam.
The new director admitted that the airport currently faces minor runway joint issues, which require timely technical intervention. However, he assured that experts have been engaged to carry out necessary repairs without affecting ongoing flight operations.
With passenger traffic steadily rising and expansion projects gathering pace, Mr. Dhandia expressed confidence that VSS Airport would soon emerge as a major aviation hub for western Odisha, offering enhanced services, better infrastructure, and improved connectivity.
