New Delhi : The Union Education Minister has directed a comprehensive safety audit of all schools across the country to ensure student safety and infrastructure compliance. The decision comes in the wake of recent incidents highlighting lapses in school safety measures, prompting authorities to take proactive steps.
According to official sources, the safety audit will cover aspects such as structural integrity, fire safety, emergency preparedness, and hygiene standards. Schools will be required to submit detailed reports, while independent inspections will verify adherence to safety protocols.
The Education Ministry emphasized that the move aims to create a safer learning environment and prevent accidents. “Student safety is paramount. This audit will help identify gaps in infrastructure and emergency preparedness, ensuring that schools meet the highest safety standards,” said the Minister.
State and local education authorities have been instructed to coordinate with school management committees to implement the audit. The initiative will cover both government and private schools, including primary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions.
Experts welcomed the decision, noting that periodic safety checks are essential for minimizing risks. Dr. Ramesh Gupta, an education analyst, said, “School safety audits are crucial. They not only protect children but also promote awareness among staff and students about emergency procedures.”
- The audit is expected to focus on several key areas:
- Building structural stability and compliance with construction norms
- Fire safety equipment and emergency exits
- First-aid readiness and trained staff for emergencies
- Hygienic facilities including drinking water and sanitation
Disaster management plans and mock drills
The Ministry has set a timeline of three months for schools to complete the audit, after which a consolidated report will be submitted to the central authorities. Schools failing to comply may face penalties or restrictions on admissions until safety measures are rectified.
The announcement has been widely praised by parents’ groups, who have long demanded stricter safety protocols in schools. With the upcoming academic year, the government aims to ensure a secure and conducive environment for millions of students nationwide.
