Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on all Indian imports starting August 1, citing unfair trade practices and India’s growing defense partnership with Russia. The announcement was made through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“Remember, India is our friend, but over the past few years, we’ve done far less trade with them — mainly because India imposes the highest tariffs in the world and enforces the most rigid and unpleasant non-economic trade barriers, compared to any other country,” Trump wrote.
He further criticized India’s decision to purchase the majority of its military equipment from Russia, at a time when global powers are urging Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.
“India continues to expand its trade ties with Russia, which is unacceptable. The U.S. cannot turn a blind eye anymore. Starting August 1, Indian imports will face a 25% tariff — consider it a penalty for unfair practices,” Trump stated.
The former president added that the U.S. has suffered major economic losses due to trade with India and vowed corrective action as part of his vision to “Make America Great Again.”
