New Delhi : US President Donald Trump has announced a fresh wave of tariffs on India, raising import duties from 25% to 50%. The move, which comes amid mounting friction over India’s continued oil trade with Russia, marks a sharp deterioration in bilateral trade relations.
Donald Trump, known for his hardline trade policies, followed through on a warning he had previously issued against India’s oil dealings with Russia. Taking to his social media platform ‘Truth Social’, Trump declared the imposition of an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods bringing the total duty to a staggering 50%.
The new directive was signed by Trump himself and will come into effect within 21 days starting August 27, 2025. From that date, all goods exported from India to the US will be subject to the revised tariffs.
As per the official order, items that leave Indian ports before August 27 and arrive in the United States by September 17 will be exempt from the new tariff. Trump also clarified that the new tariffs would be imposed in addition to any existing duties and taxes. However, there may be exemptions granted in select cases, depending on the nature of the goods and specific bilateral agreements.
Trump issued a stern warning to all countries, stating that any nation directly purchasing oil from Russia would face similar punitive trade actions from the US.
The sudden announcement has rattled Indian trade and export stakeholders, especially industries heavily reliant on US markets. The Indian government is yet to issue an official response, though backchannel diplomacy is expected to intensify in the coming days.
