Gyeongju: In a major diplomatic and defense breakthrough, the Presidential Office of South Korea on Thursday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s approval for Seoul to move ahead with its nuclear-powered submarine project. This decision marks a turning point in the growing US–South Korea defense partnership.
President Trump announced the decision on his social media platform. He confirmed that South Korea will build a nuclear-powered submarine at Philadelphia shipyards in the United States.
The announcement came a day after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung personally urged Trump to support Seoul’s request for nuclear fuel access. This was during their summit in Gyeongju, held alongside the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings.
“Our government welcomes President Trump’s decision,” said Presidential Spokesperson Kim Nam-jun during a press briefing. “This move strengthens South Korea’s defense capabilities and expands our military’s role in protecting the Republic of Korea.”
Kim also stated that Seoul will coordinate closely with Washington throughout the project, focusing on technical collaboration, safety, and strategic execution.
Trump elaborated on his decision, saying,
“I approved their request to build a nuclear-powered submarine—more advanced and capable than the older diesel models they use now.”
He added that the US–South Korea alliance remains stronger than ever. He praised President Lee as “a great leader of South Korea.” Trump described their recent summit as “a great meeting with a great partner.”
With this approval, South Korea takes a major step toward joining the elite group of nations with nuclear submarine technology. The move will enhance the country’s maritime defense and deterrence power across the Indo-Pacific region.
Analysts say Trump’s approval reflects Washington’s growing trust in Seoul’s defense readiness and signals a deeper military and technological partnership between the two allies.
