Talcher: A tense situation erupted in Talcher today when Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) began demolishing Hiloi village under the Talcher block. MCL demolishes Hiloi village, causing significant distress to the residents. Police and a magistrate oversaw the operation, which sparked outrage as MCL moved ahead without prior notice.

Villagers voiced anger, saying MCL ignored rehabilitation and employment concerns. Local MLA Braj Kishore Pradhan joined the villagers in protest, but police blocked him from entering the demolition site, creating dramatic scenes and chaos for a while.

Speaking to the media, the MLA accused MCL of violating the rights of villagers. With MCL demolishing Hiloi village, he claimed that the demolition was being executed without proper notice or attention to rehabilitation and livelihood.

“This is injustice against people with low income. I will continue my struggle until the displaced families receive justice,” Pradhan declared.

The SDPO urged the MLA not to obstruct mining work, stressing its importance for the country’s progress.

Jagannath General Manager Ashok Dhal stated that villagers had built the demolished houses illegally, even after receiving 9(1) notices. With MCL demolishing Hiloi village, he accused outsiders of constructing houses just to claim benefits. After the survey, Dhal confirmed those structures as illegal and said the administration had taken justified action.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate informed the High Court that demolition would finish by October 31. Police forces have secured the site while the magistrate continues monitoring the ongoing work.

Reports reveal that 109 families will lose their homes due to this demolition, raising serious concerns over displacement, livelihoods, and the lack of a proper rehabilitation plan now that MCL clears Hiloi village.
