Talcher, Odisha : The Talcher bypass flood this morning around 9 AM left intersections, markets, and streets almost deserted as heavy rainfall poured over the city. Dark clouds covered the sky, and water accumulated on both sides of the main traffic bypass, creating severe inconvenience for commuters.
The scene indicated that government officials stayed absent in the area, as the waterlogged bypass caused chaos. Blocked drains forced stagnant rainwater to cover the road, making pedestrians, bicyclists, scooter riders, and motorcyclists carefully navigate through the flooded streets. Water splashed onto many people, creating unpleasant and hazardous conditions. Footpaths and surrounding areas also submerged, making movement extremely difficult.
Even light rainfall on nearby streets, such as in front of UCO Bank near the bypass, caused artificial puddles and foul odor, making the area highly uncomfortable for residents and shopkeepers. Locals reported that the situation disrupted business activities in markets and shops, with many people unable to reach their workplaces on time.
Residents allege that municipal authorities collect significant taxes but fail to take proper action to prevent flooding. Some citizens blame mismanagement by certain officials and contractors, which worsens the drainage problem. Intellectuals and local observers call the situation in Talcher “unfortunate and cursed,” highlighting administrative negligence.
Even after repeated media coverage, NH authorities, local public works departments, the Sub-Collector, and Municipal officials ignored the issue. Residents continue to demand urgent intervention from the Angul District Collector to ensure proper drainage, timely maintenance, and prevention of waterlogging during future rains.
