Srinagar: The winter chill has officially arrived in the Kashmir Valley. This is because Srinagar temperature below freezing point was recorded for the first time this season. The city shivered at minus 0.1°C on Monday. This marks the beginning of a colder phase across Jammu and Kashmir.
According to officials from the Meteorological (MeT) Department, “This is for the first time this season that the minimum temperature has dipped below the freezing point in Srinagar city.” The department added that dry weather is expected to continue for the next fortnight. However, clear night skies could push temperatures even lower in the coming days.
Popular hill destinations also saw the mercury plummet. Gulmarg recorded minus 0.2°C, while Pahalgam emerged as the coldest spot at minus 3.2°C. Jammu city recorded 11.5°C, Katra 11°C, Batote 4.6°C, and Bhaderwah 2.2°C as the minimum temperature on Monday.
As icy winds sweep into the Valley from snow-capped mountains, residents have begun pulling out heavy woollens. The traditional Kashmiri ‘Pheran’, a long tweed overcoat, has returned to daily wear. To combat the bitter chill, locals also use a ‘Kangri’ an earthen pot filled with charcoal, placed inside the Pheran for warmth.
The harshest winter spell, known as ‘Chillai Kalan’, starts on December 21 and lasts until January 30. During this time, many water bodies in the Valley freeze entirely.
Health experts have urged people to stay cautious. Pulmonologist Dr. Naveed Nazir Shah advised older people and children to protect themselves from cold exposure. This will prevent chest infections and respiratory issues.
With Srinagar temperature below freezing point so early in the season, locals are bracing for an intense winter ahead.
