New Delhi: A SpiceJet emergency landing created panic on Monday night when a flight from Mumbai to Kolkata faced a technical issue after one of its engines failed during descent. The aircraft landed safely, and the crew ensured that all passengers deplaned without incident, Kolkata Airport officials said.
SpiceJet said in a statement, “On November 9, SpiceJet flight SG 670 operating from Mumbai to Kolkata experienced a technical issue during descent at Kolkata airport. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew deplaned normally.” Airport authorities lifted the full emergency at 11:38 p.m. after confirming the situation was under control.
This isn’t the first such case involving the airline. On September 12, a SpiceJet Q400 flight from Kandla to Mumbai made a similar emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) after staff noticed an outer wheel on the runway following take-off. The plane landed safely, and the crew evacuated everyone without harm.
Meanwhile, flight operations across major airports slowed down as Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet alerted travellers about delays caused by a temporary Air Traffic Control (ATC) system glitch at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Airlines asked passengers to check flight status before arriving at the airport and deployed additional staff to assist travellers and reduce inconvenience. Airport officials fixed the technical issue, and operations returned to normal.
Although the SpiceJet emergency landing ended safely, the airline continues to face financial turbulence. In the April–June quarter, it posted a net loss of ₹234 crore a steep fall from the ₹158.18 crore profit in the same quarter last year. The airline blamed geopolitical tensions, airspace restrictions, and delays in engine maintenance and spare parts for reduced capacity.
