Balasore, Odisha : In a significant development in the tragic death of third-year B.Ed student Soumyashree at FM (Autonomous) College, Balasore, the state Crime Branch today filed a preliminary chargesheet. The investigation has so far collected critical evidence, including statements from 120 witnesses and digital proof from various gadgets. The chargesheet has been submitted in court under Section 193(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), covering 504 pages.
The police are continuing the investigation to gather further evidence and determine the involvement of additional individuals under BNSS Section 193(9).
According to the complaint lodged by the victim’s brother, Arijit De, the probe, led by DSP Iman Kalyani Nayak of CAW & CW, revealed that Soumyashree faced mental harassment from her department head and assistant professor Samir Kumar Sahu, who allegedly made inappropriate demands. The harassment reportedly led to Soumyashree taking her own life on July 14 while under treatment at Bhubaneswar AIIMS.
During the ongoing investigation, four individuals have been arrested. FM College’s Education Department HOD and Assistant Professor Samir Kumar Sahu were taken into custody on July 12, while the college principal, Dileep Kumar Ghosh, was arrested on July 14. Additionally, students Subhra Sambit Nayak and Jyoti Prakash Bishwal were arrested on August 3 in connection with the case.
The police have assured that the probe is continuing thoroughly to ensure justice for Soumyashree and strict action against all involved parties.
