Bhubaneswar , Odisha : Sambalpur University marked its 35th Convocation Ceremony at Jyoti Vihar on September 13, where Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati called upon the youth to become ethical, responsible, and globally competent citizens. Addressing the graduating students, the Governor emphasized that their role is crucial in shaping the future of the nation and carrying forward the vision of a developed India by 2047.
The Governor highlighted that the success achieved by students today is the result of years of hard work, the dedicated guidance of teachers, and the unwavering support of families. He reminded them that convocation is not just a celebration but also the beginning of a new journey filled with responsibilities and service to society.
Tracing the history of the University, established in 1967, the Governor praised its contribution in nurturing young minds in Western Odisha and beyond. He appreciated its role in driving social and economic transformation while maintaining a balance between academic excellence, character building, and community service. In recent years, Sambalpur University has strengthened teaching and research, embraced innovation, and remained committed to social responsibility, he added.
Dr. Kambhampati also stressed that character without knowledge cannot build a prosperous nation. Referring to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, he described it as a transformative framework aligning India’s education system with global standards while rooted in cultural values. He lauded the University’s initiatives to implement NEP 2020 through interdisciplinary courses, compulsory internships, entrepreneurship, environmental studies, and disaster management programs.
The convocation was graced by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who underlined the need for universities to contribute to the happiness, prosperity, and welfare of Odisha’s people. He emphasized promoting education in the mother tongue and called for improving the quality of higher education to make Odisha future-ready. He also announced an allocation of ₹157 crore for strengthening the University’s infrastructure and research facilities.
Several dignitaries, including Ravi Narayan Naik, Minister for Rural Development, Surjya Banshi Suraj, Minister for Higher Education, and Samapada Chandra Swain, Minister for Industry and Skill Development, addressed the gathering. Sambalpur MLA Jayanarayan Mishra was also present.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bidhu Bhusan Mishra welcomed the guests and highlighted the achievements of the institution. During the ceremony, outstanding researchers were awarded PhD, D.Sc, and D.Litt degrees, while meritorious students received gold medals. Winners of the Chancellor’s Cup were also felicitated.
The 35th Convocation reaffirmed Sambalpur University’s commitment to nurturing youth who can take India forward as responsible, skilled, and ethical global citizens.
