Jharsuguda (Bijay Shankar Dash): Speeding through the streets on roaring bikes has become a style statement for some youngsters in Jharsuguda. Now, this trend has taken a louder turn with the addition of modified silencers, creating chest-thumping noise that shakes the city.
Under the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 (Sections 52 and 182), using or selling vehicles fitted with modified silencers is a punishable offense. Yet, several reckless bikers in Jharsuguda are removing original silencers and installing modified ones that produce thunderous sounds. These loud bikes not only disturb pedestrians but also distract other drivers, creating chaos on busy roads.
After multiple complaints, Jharsuguda Town Police cracked down on such offenders last February, seizing over 15 bikes. The move temporarily curbed the nuisance. However, some riders ignored the warning and returned to their noisy habits. On September 19, police once again seized 8 more bikes fitted with modified silencers.
Despite these actions, it seems the bikers have no fear of police operations. The echo of modified silencers has once again started disturbing residents across the town. People are demanding strict action against shops selling these illegal silencers and bikers violating the law.
Citizens have also urged authorities to intensify the crackdown and maintain peace on the roads. Locals say these deafening sounds not only break the city’s calm but also endanger public safety.
Jharsuguda police, meanwhile, have assured continuous monitoring and stricter enforcement in the coming weeks to restore order and silence on the roads.
