Bhubaneswar, Odisha: After losing the 2024 general election, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is facing organizational setbacks across several districts. In this context, the party has suffered a major blow in the tribal heartland of Rayagada, as senior leader and former Rajya Sabha MP N. Bhaskar Rao resigned from the party. Rao’s resignation and the formation of the Biju Swabhiman Manch (BSM) have created a political storm in Rayagada Politics, posing a fresh challenge for the Conch party.
Bhaskar Rao was a long-time loyalist of the BJD and a well-known face in southern Odisha. However, political rifts developed between him and three-time MLA and former minister Jagnnath Saraka. As Saraka’s influence in Rayagada grew, Bhaskar found himself increasingly sidelined despite his strong grassroots presence and district-level influence in Rayagada Politics.
Several senior leaders and supporters joined Bhaskar after his resignation, including tribal leader Lal Bihar Himirika. With their backing, Bhaskar established the Biju Swabhiman Manch to preserve his legacy and maintain his political stronghold in the district. Rao had also played a key role in implementing developmental projects in Rayagada and neighboring districts, impacting Rayagada Politics significantly.
Currently, Bhaskar is planning to strengthen the BSM organization. According to sources, he is in touch with senior leaders from neighboring districts to strategize for the upcoming Panchayat polls. Rayagada, being a tribal-dominated district, makes Bhaskar’s influence and organizational plans crucial for local politics.
Bhaskar’s next moves could include expanding the Biju Swabhiman Manch or forming alliances with the saffron party ahead of the Panchayat and Assembly elections. Experts opine that his strategy will be decisive, making this a critical time for the Conch party to present an alternative face and reinforce its organization ahead of the upcoming polls in Rayagada Politics.
