Bhubaneswar : The monsoon continues its active spell across Odisha with widespread rainfall recorded in several districts. While most areas have experienced normal rainfall, some regions are witnessing significant variations, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Yellow Alert for 20 districts.
According to the latest reports, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts topped the rainfall chart with 49% excess rainfall, followed by Deogarh (48%), Boudh (38%), Jharsuguda and Sonepur (31%), and Sambalpur (24%).
Conversely, rainfall remains deficient in Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kalahandi. Puri recorded a 34% deficit, Ganjam 24%, Kalahandi 20%, and Gajapati a staggering 3%.
A cyclonic circulation has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, extending into coastal Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, leading to increased moisture inflow and unstable atmospheric conditions. Dr. Sarat Sahu, Director of the Center for Weather and Climate Studies, stated that the system is expected to trigger widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across various parts of the state.
The IMD has predicted intense rainfall in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh districts on Thursday. Additionally, moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are expected in the following districts: Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Puri,Khorda,
Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati. Wind speeds in these regions may reach 30–40 km/h, as per the IMD forecast.
Among the latest 24-hour rainfall figures, Bhadrak recorded the highest with 43 mm, followed by:
- Chandbali: 24.4 mm
- Jajpur: 25 mm
- Keonjhar: 8.8 mm
- Kendrapara: 6 mm
- Baripada: 5.8 mm
