New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted citizens on Mahalaya, hoping our lives filled with light inspire positivity, purpose, and harmony across India. Moreover, he posted on X, “Wishing you all Shubho Mahalaya! As the sacred days of Durga Puja draw near, may our lives be filled with light and purpose. May the divine blessings of Maa Durga bring unwavering strength, lasting joy, and wonderful health.”
Mahalaya concludes ‘Shradh’ or ‘Pitru Paksha,’ a 16-day period when Hindus honour their ancestors, and thus marks the official start of Durga Puja festivities.
Additionally, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared her greetings on social media. She wrote, “Awake Durga, awake, bearer of ten weapons.” She added, “On the occasion of Tan, Agomoni, and Abahan, I offer my heartfelt Mahalaya greetings. I am sharing a new Puja song that I wrote and composed.”
Mahalaya ushers in Devi Paksha, a 10-day celebration of Goddess Durga that culminates in Durga Puja. For example, devotees celebrate her arrival on Earth to defeat the demon king Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
In West Bengal, people rise early to listen to the pre-dawn broadcast of Mahishasura Mardini, a programme of hymns and chants invoking the Goddess. Meanwhile, thousands perform ‘tarpan,’ paying respects to their ancestors on the banks of the Hooghly River and other water bodies, marking the start of the festive season.
Following Mahalaya, communities begin intensive preparations for Durga Puja. Sculptors paint the eyes of Devi Durga in a ritual called ‘Chokhhu Daan,’ officially signaling that the countdown to the festival has begun. Street pandals take shape, artisans complete idol decorations, and as a result, the entire state immerses itself in the festive spirit.
Therefore, Mahalaya blends devotion, culture, and tradition, inspiring millions to celebrate life with hope and reverence. From prayers to rituals, the day emphasizes light, strength, and the victory of good over evil, setting the tone for the joyous Durga Puja celebrations ahead.
