New Delhi : The PM Modi address today will see the Prime Minister speak to the nation at 5 pm, sharing updates on government initiatives, policies, and national priorities.
Although officials have not confirmed the exact topics, many expect him to focus on the upcoming Goods and Services Tax (GST) 2.0 reforms, set to come into effect on Monday (September 22).
The timing is significant, as the address comes a day before the rollout of GST 2.0. Many believe the Prime Minister will highlight how these reforms aim to ease citizens’ tax burden.
On August 15, speaking from the Red Fort, PM Modi announced that next-generation GST reforms would arrive by Diwali. He described the move as a Diwali gift that would lower taxes on essential items and boost economic activity.
“The government will bring Next Generation GST reforms, which will lower the tax burden on the common man. It will be a Diwali gift for you,” PM Modi said, emphasizing that the reforms provide direct relief to citizens.
On September 4, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman confirmed that the GST Council approved the new reform package. She explained that the reforms aim to simplify the tax system, benefit small businesses, and make trading easier for entrepreneurs.
The GST Council’s decision reduces taxes on a wide range of items, from packaged foods to consumer electronics, moving toward a simplified two-rate structure. The goal is to make the tax regime simpler and stimulate demand.
Besides GST, the Prime Minister may address other pressing issues, such as the U.S. crackdown on H-1B visa holders, which affects many Indian tech professionals. He might also comment on India’s tariff disagreements with Washington and reinforce the call for ‘Swadeshi’ and an Atmanirbhar Bharat.
PM Modi last addressed the nation on May 12, briefing citizens on Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory action following the terror attack in Pahalgam.
