New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal received a traditional Maori welcome in New Zealand. It marked a culturally vibrant beginning to his official visit. The ceremony took place in Te Puia, Rotorua. He was accompanied by New Zealand’s Trade Minister Todd McClay.
Sharing his experience on X (formerly Twitter), Goyal posted, “Delighted to receive a traditional Maori welcome upon my arrival in Te Puia, Rotorua, alongside New Zealand’s Trade Minister Todd McClay. Deeply value this cultural gesture, which signifies welcoming us into their community in the spirit of peace, harmony, and mutual growth.”
During the ceremony, he was presented with an idol of the sacred Kamdhenu cow, a symbol of prosperity and goodwill in Indian culture, reflecting the growing people-to-people and cultural connection between India and New Zealand. Goyal also thanked Rotorua Mayor Tania Tapsell for the warm reception and expressed enthusiasm for the day’s engagements.
Earlier in his journey, Goyal met Nikhil Ravishankar, CEO of Air New Zealand. They discussed strengthening regional connectivity and opportunities in India’s expanding aviation sector.
Highlighting bilateral trade potential, the minister said a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand would boost trade and investment. It would also demonstrate how both nations can collaborate for global progress.
During a joint media address with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Goyal emphasized cooperation in innovation, maritime development, aerospace, defence, tourism, and education. The visit the largest Indian delegation to New Zealand stands as a milestone. Piyush Goyal received a traditional Maori welcome in New Zealand, symbolizing friendship, respect, and partnership.
