New Delhi : Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday urged the promotion of physiotherapy as an integral part of healthy ageing initiatives, highlighting its significance in improving mobility, independence, and overall quality of life for individuals of all ages.

Speaking on the occasion of World Physiotherapy Day, observed annually on September 8, Nadda emphasised the role of physiotherapy in strengthening movement after falls, stroke, and other conditions. “Let us acknowledge the crucial role physiotherapy plays in improving mobility, enhancing independence, and ensuring better quality of life for individuals of all ages,” he said in a social media post.

The theme this year, “Healthy Ageing – Role of Physiotherapy in Falls and Frailty”, underscores its importance in preventing falls and managing frailty among the elderly, supporting active and dignified ageing. Nadda added, “Let us continue to promote physiotherapy as an integral part of healthy ageing initiatives across the nation.”

Physiotherapy, often associated with back pain treatment, is also crucial for recovery from stroke, sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, chronic pain management, and improving the health of elderly patients prone to falls.

The Minister also highlighted government initiatives aimed at enhancing elderly healthcare. Programs such as Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) provide senior citizens aged 70 and above with free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. Additionally, National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) and Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) offer dedicated healthcare services and assistive devices for senior citizens.

“Government under the dynamic leadership of PM Narendra Modi has many schemes for the benefit of the elderly available at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and government hospitals,” Nadda said, urging senior citizens to avail themselves of these healthcare services.

With over 1.6 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs providing primary healthcare across India, the integration of physiotherapy into elderly care initiatives remains a key focus for promoting healthy ageing nationwide.
