Surendranagar, Gujarat: Panic gripped Gomta village on Saturday night due to suspected food poisoning in Gujarat as over 60 people, including women and children, fell ill after consuming buttermilk during a house Vastu ceremony. Villagers showed symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach pain, prompting locals to rush them to hospitals in Limbdi and Wadhwan.
Taluka Health Officer Jayesh Vaghela confirmed, “All patients remain under medical supervision, and their condition is stable despite the suspected food poisoning in Gujarat.” Health teams and local authorities immediately reached the site to assess and manage the situation. They also collected buttermilk samples for lab testing to identify the contamination source.
Meanwhile, the district Health Department launched an inquiry into the suspected food poisoning in Gujarat and actively monitors the affected area. Officials expressed relief as most victims began recovering.
The Gujarat government has strengthened its food safety measures, carrying out inspections, awareness drives, and campaigns on hygiene at community events, especially after the suspected food poisoning in Gujarat. In 2024–25, the Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) tested over 60,000 food samples, with 0.17% found unsafe. Authorities filed 980 adjudication cases, collecting fines of Rs 6.21 crore, while 87 court cases imposed additional penalties of Rs 0.54 crore.
Statewide raids target adulterated and unsafe food, and officials actively educate the public on safe food handling, especially during large gatherings and festive occasions.
This incident serves as a strong reminder for residents and organizers to prioritize hygiene and food safety, ensuring celebrations do not turn into health hazards.
