London, Kennington Oval : India suffered a batting collapse on Day 1 of the Oval Test, getting bowled out for just 224 runs in their first innings. England’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss paid off handsomely, thanks to a lethal spell from Gus Atkinson, who scalped a brilliant five-wicket haul, well supported by Josh Tongue, who picked up three wickets.
India’s innings never really took off, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Yashasvi Jaiswal managed only 2 runs, while KL Rahul departed for 14. Youngster Sai Sudharsan provided a brief resistance with 38 runs, and skipper Shubman Gill chipped in with 21.
Despite a hundred in the previous Test, Ravindra Jadeja couldn’t replicate his form and fell cheaply for 9. However, Karun Nair showed composure under pressure and fought hard for a gritty 57, emerging as India’s top scorer. Dhruv Jurel added 19, while Washington Sundar made 26, contributing to a modest total.
England’s pacers dominated from the outset. Atkinson’s five-for tore through the Indian middle order, while Tongue ensured pressure from the other end. The remaining two wickets were shared among the support bowlers.
India will now rely on their bowlers to make a strong comeback and restrict England’s batting lineup.
