Titlagarh (Bolangir): In a major crackdown on corruption, the Odisha Vigilance on Wednesday apprehended Sri Umakanta Mahakur, Assistant CT&GST Officer, Titlagarh, District Bolangir. Odisha Vigilance nabs CT&GST officer in Titlagarh following this operation. He was demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 12,000 from a businessman. This was to waive off penalty for non-payment of professional tax.
According to officials, the complainant had failed to pay professional tax amounting to Rs 7,500 for three financial years (Rs 2,500 per year). For this, accused officer Mahakur issued a notice. Odisha Vigilance nabs CT&GST officer in Titlagarh as a result of his corrupt practices. He demanded Rs 23,600, which included tax amount, fine, and interest.
When the businessman approached the officer to clear only the tax dues, Mahakur refused to accept it. Odisha Vigilance nabs CT&GST officer in Titlagarh in order to address this corruption. He allegedly demanded Rs 12,000 in bribe to waive off the fine and interest. The victim then reported the matter to the Odisha Vigilance authorities.
Acting swiftly, a team of Vigilance officers laid a trap. They nabbed Mahakur red-handed while taking the tainted bribe money of Rs 12,000 from the complainant. The entire cash was recovered from his possession and seized as evidence.
Following the successful operation, simultaneous searches were launched at locations associated with Mahakur to investigate his disproportionate assets (DA) angle.
In this connection, Sambalpur Vigilance PS Case No. 21/2025 has been registered. It is under Section 7 of the PC (Amendment) Act, 2018 against the accused Assistant CT&GST Officer. Investigation is currently in progress, and a detailed report is awaited.
