Bhubaneswar, Odisha : The Odisha government recently signed three strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to promote heritage conservation, adventure tourism, and Buddhist pilgrimage circuits. The ceremony took place at Lok Seva Bhavan, with Deputy Chief Minister Smt. Pravati Parida, Minister Shri Suryabanshi Suraj, and Chief Secretary Shri Manoj Ahuja present. Moreover, the event showcased Odisha’s vision to strengthen tourism across sectors.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida stated the MoUs reflect Odisha’s commitment to conserve heritage, diversify tourism offerings, and expand globally. She emphasized executing these projects in mission mode for meaningful outcomes. Minister Suryabanshi Suraj described the Buddhist tourism initiative as a historic partnership to revive Odisha’s cultural legacy. Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja highlighted tourism’s role in economic growth, cultural preservation, and livelihood creation. Consequently, these initiatives will enhance Odisha’s tourism ecosystem.
The MoU with IIT Madras focuses on advanced techniques for auditing and conserving heritage monuments. It includes documentation, material testing, geo-technical investigations, and project report preparation. In addition, sustainable reuse plans and project management support will ensure the long-term preservation of historic sites.
The Tourism Department partnered with NIWS, Goa, to promote water and adventure tourism. This initiative introduces global safety standards, safety audits, and training programs for operators and lifeguards. Given Odisha’s coastline and water resources, the project offers significant opportunities for youth employment. Similarly, it aims to position Odisha as a top adventure tourism destination.
The third MoU, with LBDFI and the Odia Language, Literature & Culture Department, will revive Buddhist pilgrimage circuits. Annual prayer ceremonies will be held at Ratnagiri, Udayagiri, Lalitagiri, and Dhauli. In addition, visitor amenities will improve, and cultural programs will highlight Odisha’s Buddhist heritage.
Officials noted that these collaborations mark a milestone in building a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready tourism ecosystem. By combining heritage, adventure, and cultural tourism, Odisha aims to become one of India’s most admired destinations.
