Bhubaneswar, Odisha : Odisha recently celebrated the 42nd Foundation Day of the State Pollution Control Board (PCB), highlighting the urgent need for sustainable practices and widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) to curb pollution. Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, the Governor of Odisha emphasized citizens’ role in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting a cleaner, healthier environment.
Speaking at the event in Bhubaneswar, the Governor underlined that rapidly growing urban centers demand collective action to ensure environmental protection and public health. He praised the State Government for transforming official vehicles into EVs, significantly cutting carbon emissions, and setting an example for others to follow. The Governor encouraged households to install solar systems, noting that such measures not only reduce electricity bills but also promote clean energy adoption. Eligible citizens can avail government subsidies under various schemes.
The event spotlighted the importance of a holistic approach to pollution control. The Governor called for collaborative action, urging citizens, students, and communities to actively participate in upcoming statewide tree-planting campaigns on September 17. He highlighted that such initiatives will expand green cover, improve air quality, and mitigate the impact of climate change.
Officials, including Dr. Kambhampati, praised the PCB’s four-decade journey in balancing industrial growth with environmental responsibility. He acknowledged the board’s efforts in improving air quality, river restoration, and real-time monitoring of industrial and water resources. Programs like the Surya Ghar solar initiative, e-buses, EV subsidies, and rooftop solar installations were commended for their contribution to a sustainable Odisha.
The Governor also cautioned that pollution poses serious risks to health, livelihoods, and future generations. He urged citizens to reduce plastic use, manage e-waste responsibly, conserve water, plant trees, and adopt renewable energy. He encouraged the PCB to leverage digital tools, promote zero-waste industries, and engage youth for innovative environmental solutions.
During the program, the Governor inaugurated three PCB websites and publications, honored sand artist Manas Kumar Sahu, and awarded excellence and recognition prizes to organizations and women driving green initiatives. The event celebrated the PCB’s commitment to environmental protection and encouraged public participation in creating a sustainable and eco-friendly Odisha.
