Bhubaneswar, Odisha : Following multiple alarming incidents of hidden cameras being smuggled into the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha’s Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Monday said the government is taking the matter seriously and will initiate strict security protocols inside and outside the shrine.
The Minister stated that the government has already begun the process of implementing tighter screening measures. “Due to the rise in use of spy cameras embedded in spectacles, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for police to detect them during routine checks. However, the presence of light during photo capturing can be a giveaway,” he added.
In the past 10 days, there have been at least three reported cases of individuals trying to carry hidden cameras into the sanctum premises:
On July 29, a youth from Puri was caught at the Singhadwar entrance with a spy camera embedded in his glasses. He was intercepted by a Jagannath Temple Police (JTP) officer and handed over to Singhadwar Police Station.
On Monday, a man from Gujarat was detained near Kirtan Chakada inside the temple premises for attempting a similar act.
Again, on Tuesday morning, a man from West Bengal was caught trying to enter through the western gate with a concealed camera. He was immediately apprehended by on-duty security personnel.
Singhadwar Police have registered cases in all incidents and are actively investigating. The detained individuals are being questioned to uncover motives and determine whether larger networks are involved.
