Bhubaneswar: Authorities have issued a cyclone alert as Odisha prepares for heavy rainfall and strong winds in the coming days. A low-pressure area currently affects the western central parts of the state and the adjoining northwestern Bay of Bengal.
Meteorologists expect this system to intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area within the next 12 hours. It may further strengthen into a depression over the next 24 hours. The low-pressure area is already impacting several parts of Odisha.
Another low-pressure area may form over the northwestern and adjoining western central Bay of Bengal by August 18. This system could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall from Monday onwards, especially in Koraput and Malkangiri districts. Other districts, including Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Nuapada, may experience heavy rainfall and winds reaching 30–40 kmph.
The Regional Meteorological Centre predicts that rainfall will continue in Odisha until August 20 due to these systems. Additionally, another low-pressure area may develop over the Bay of Bengal around August 27.
Authorities advise residents to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety guidelines as the state faces potential adverse weather conditions.
