Bhubaneswar, Odisha : The state government has made it mandatory for all commercial establishments to display signboards in the Odia script. This directive is aimed at ensuring better visibility of the Odia language and facilitating public convenience.
According to an official letter issued by Principal Secretary Usha Padhee, the Housing and Urban Development Department has instructed all Municipal Corporations, Municipalities, and Notified Area Councils to implement this rule strictly. The directive mandates that at least 60% of the total area of any signage or nameplate must be written in Odia script.
The order applies to all shops and business establishments operating under urban local bodies, and aims to enhance the linguistic visibility of the state’s official language in public spaces.
To encourage adherence, the government has announced a 5% rebate on trade license renewal fees for establishments complying with the new signage norms.
All commercial units are expected to comply by September 30, 2025. During trade license renewals and inspections, adherence to this rule will be verified.
Establishments that fail to display signboards in Odia will first be issued notices and granted 15 days to make the necessary corrections. Failing which, they will face a daily penalty of ₹500 until compliance is achieved.
