Sambalpur, Odisha : The auspicious timing for Nuakhai, the famous agrarian festival of Western Odisha, has been announced in Sambalpur. This year, the Nabanna (new harvest offering) will be celebrated on August 28, Thursday, with rituals dedicated to Goddess Samaleswari, the presiding deity of Sambalpur.
As per the Shubh Lagna (auspicious timing) determined by scholars based on the zodiac and nakshatra of Maa Samalei, the Nabanna will be offered at the shrine of Maa Samaleswari between 10:33 am and 10:55 am. After the ceremonial offering, people across households will partake in the first harvest meal, marking the joy of abundance and togetherness.
The rituals were finalised at the Brahmapura temple of Jharuapada, where a panel of priests recited the Vishnu Sahasranama before announcing the Shubh Lagna. The festival holds deep cultural and emotional significance for Western Odisha, uniting families, communities, and villages in celebration of prosperity and gratitude to nature.
Nuakhai is not only a harvest festival but also a symbol of cultural identity for the people of Western Odisha, celebrated with devotion, feasting, and traditional customs.
