Berhampur, Odisha : A dreaded criminal, Sunil Nahak alias Malla, was injured in a police encounter early this morning on the Pitatali-Chikiti road in Golanthara police limits, Ganjam district. Acting on a tip-off, a special team led by Inspector Vivekananda Swain, under the direction of Berhampur SP, launched an operation to apprehend Sunil, who had been on the run for several serious offences.
As the police team approached, Sunil opened fire and reportedly fired two rounds at the police. One of the bullets hit the police vehicle, prompting the team to retaliate in self-defence. Sunil was shot and injured in the exchange and has since been taken into custody.
Sunil is a history-sheeter with over 20 criminal cases against him, including two murder cases, loot, robbery, theft, and snatching. He was also the prime accused in the high-profile loot incident under the Nimakhandi police station and had been absconding for a long time.
According to police sources, the Berhampur Police have received clearance to conduct encounters in extreme situations involving high-risk criminals. Authorities have also prepared a list of most-wanted criminals in the region and are currently in “action mode” to curb rising criminal activity in the city.
